Mixed Programme Weekend #2

10–12 Sep 2027

About this workshop

The repertoire ranges widely across five centuries, from the poised Renaissance polyphony of Josquin and Tallis and the warmth of a Bach chorale, through the rich English Romantic writing of Sullivan and Parry, to contemporary works by Frank Ticheli and Paul Ayres - and a fun 'remix' of a well-known popular song. Sacred and secular music sit side by side, moving from intimate, reflective writing to more expansive and playful repertoire.

The weekend focuses on ensemble skills across contrasting musical languages: clarity of text, balance between parts, tuning, rhythmic coordination, and stylistic flexibility. Working in small to medium mixed-voice groups, singers will explore how different composers treat similar themes in very different musical ways.

Repertoire

  • Chorale: Von Gott kommt mir ein Freudenschein (from BWV 172) Johann Sebastian Bach
  • The Long Day Closes Arthur Sullivan
  • My Soul, There is a country (from Songs of Farewell) Hubert Parry
  • Tu pauperum refugium Josquin des Prez
  • If ye love me Thomas Tallis
  • The white cliffs of Dover arr. Paul Ayres
  • Earth Song Frank Ticheli
  • Let It Be (a Renaissance Madrigal) Jonasquin

Requirements

The workshop is aimed at singers who are musically secure and enjoy working independently, but it is not about perfection. Participants should be comfortable preparing their music in advance, reading their line confidently, and holding it within the ensemble without relying on others — while remaining open to listening, adjusting, and shaping the sound together. The emphasis is on thoughtful, collaborative music-making in a supportive but focused environment.

Schedule

Guests arrive in time for dinner on Friday which is followed by our first singing session.

Four sessions throughout the day on Saturday, with a spell of free time in the afternoon to relax or walk in the glorious local countryside.

Two sessions on Sunday morning; guests depart after lunch.
